solid curve for the United States is reasonably accurate since
starting dates for all stations are available, but it was still
necessary to use a model for the growth of transmitter power and
daily broadcast hours for each station. The dashed curve for the
entire world is correct for 1975 and only estimated for earlier
dates. The increasing number of stars bathed by the expanding power
bubble (as of 1980) is indicated at the top.
