CP-2156 Life In The Universe
Figure 4. One of the most crowded
regions of the radio signature of Earth: calculated spectra of
0.1-Hz-wide video carriers fro Channel 3 (62.260 MHz) as observed
from the star Kruger 60 at a distance of 12.9 light years. The four
Greenwich sidereal times (GST) cover the period during which the star
scrapes the northern horizon at lower culmination as seen from the
United States. The illustrated frequency offsets arise solely from
the Doppler shift due to the rotation of Earth; in reality, the
degree of crowding is much less since the frequencies of video
carriers often wander by as much ±200 Hz from their assigned
frequencies. Individual stations are labeled by numbers.
