SP-345 Evolution of the Solar
System
FIGURE 21.8.6.- Experimental
arrangement for critical velocity measurement used by Danielsson. The
left part is a plasma gun, emitting a magnetized plasma with a
velocity v0. In a long drift
tube, the longitudinal magnetization is changed to transverse
magnetization A thin cloud of gas is injected through the gas valve.
If v0 is below the
critical velocity, the plasma beam passes through the gas cloud with
very little interaction be cause the mean free path is long. If
v0 is above the
critical velocity, there is a strong interaction, bringing the
velocity to near the critical value At the same time, the gas cloud
becomes partially ionized. (From Danielsson, 1969b.)
