on Mariner spacecraft H and 1.

NASA attempted to launch Mariner H;
because of a Centaur stage failure the range safety officer
destroyed the spacecraft shortly after launch.

NASA launched Mariner 9
successfully.
Nov. 13, 1971
Mariner 9 began orbiting Mars.
Oct. 27, 1972
NASA terminated the Mariner 9 mission
because the supply of attitude control fuel had been
depleted.
