SP-402 A New Sun: The Solar Results
From Skylab
CHANGING FACES OF THE SUN, one for
each of the 59 days spent in orbit by Skylab's second crew, are shown
as a solar diary in the next three pages. Two pages would have
sufficed for the 28 day record of the first crew the third crew, in
orbit for 84 days, would have needed six. During the 59 days shown
here, the Sun spun more than two full turns around its axis. Solar
rotation is apparent in these daily portraits, as are real changes on
the Sun. Each photo shows the lower chromosphere in the red (
) line of hydrogen; bright features
are centers of activity on the Sun. Skylab's astronauts watched these
constant changes in similar
pictures on live television at
their solar telescope control console.
