[261] In 1941, a nucleus of 150 staff was transferred from Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory to the new Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory. During the NACA period, the staff remained at a relatively constant level. In 1962 the staff began to expand rapidly, reaching its highest level in 1965, with 4,815 employees. After 1966 the staff totals began to decline. The most dramatic reduction in staff occurred between 1972 and 1974, reaching its lowest level in 1982.
