[iii] This book was started many years ago. From time to time, the work was interrupted in favor of tasks that seemed more pressing. Meanwhile, the number of names generated by NASA continued to grow, and the work to be done increased. Now it has been brought to completion, and I am happy to offer it to the public. From the number of times the staff has consulted the manuscript to answer telephone queries, the publication should prove useful.
