Operation of the High Resolution Imager. X-rays enter the
microchannel plates shown at the top of the figure. The X-rays
produce a cascade of photoelectrons that emerge from a few tubes at
the surface. The electron charge cloud spreads over the criss-crossed
grid of very fine wires. This grid of wires produces the electric
signals that are decoded to give the position of the incoming X-ray.
