GUIDELINES FOR ADVANCED MANNED SPACE VEHICLE PROGRAM

APPENDIX III - PROBLEM AREAS FOR MISSIONS, PROPULSION, AND FLIGHT TIMES

[63] 1. A study of "free return" and, therefore, relatively "safe" trajectories which are also acceptable from the standpoint of earth reentry conditions.

2. A study of the effect of the moon's shape on:

(a) Return from a circumlunar pass

(b) Lunar orbits

(c) Return from a lunar orbit.

3. A study of the stability of lunar orbits at various altitudes above the moon's surface. Reconnaissance objectives will probably require close lunar orbit, at least on later missions prior to a landing mission.

4. A study of the use of the available auxiliary propulsion to return to earth from an emergency situation during the midcourse phase of the flight.

5. A detailed study needs to be made to determine the trade-offs between using a one- or two-component lunar vehicle. Such a study should consider the optimum distribution of systems and supplies between the two components.

6. A detailed study is required to determine the most desirable type of system for providing the required electrical power.
