Appendix 2. Technical Details of Jupiter Images.

 

 

[189-193] THIS TABLE lists the important parameters regarding the Jovian images taken by Pioneer 10 in the period of four days on either side of closest approach to the planet. The first column gives the sequence of the images, or image number, numbering down to periapsis and up afterward: A images are before periapsis; B images are after periapsis. Missing numbers, e.g., A4 and A24, refer to images of satellites, not listed in this appendix.

The mid time is the time at which the data forming the central line of the image was received on Earth. It is expressed in day of year (DOY), hours, and minutes of Universal Time.

The other columns refer to the position of the spacecraft when the data was taken. Range, measured from the spacecraft to the center of Jupiter, and pixel size, are given in kilometers. The pixel size can be used to assess the resolution limit of a picture. The phase angle is the angle between the direction from Jupiter to the Sun and the direction from Jupiter to the spacecraft. When the phase angle is zero, a fully illuminated disc is seen. As the angle increases, the terminator moves across the face of the visible disc until at 90° there is a half disc image. Above a phase angle of 90° the illuminated part appears increasingly crescent shaped as the angle approaches its maximum possible value of 180°. The visual effect of changing phase angle is illustrated in Figure 8-1 for Pioneer 10.

The latitude and longitude of the center of the disc as seen by the spacecraft are also given. Negative latitude values refer to the southern hemisphere. Jupiter rotates at slightly different rates depending on the latitude, and there are two commonly used systems for expressing longitude. The longitude in these systems I and II is provided in the last two columns of the table, respectively.
