Day 1: Earth Orbit and Translunar Injection

Apollo 17 has just entered an orbit around Earth after a successful and spectacular night launch that was 2 hours, 40 minutes late due to a ground problem. Very shortly, the spacecraft will go out of range of the tracking ship USNS Vanguard. Had it launched on the originally intended azimuth of 72°, it would have passed trough the reception area of a station on one of the Canary Island. Instead, the actual azimuth of 91.503° will take it far south of that station. It will next be picked up by the Carnarvon tracking station in Australia half an orbit around Earth.

000:16:42 - This is Apollo Control at 16 minutes, 45 seconds after lift-off. We've confirmed Apollo 17 is in a near nominal orbit. The crew reported an orbit of about 93.5 by 89.5 [nautical miles, 173.2 by 165.8 km] based on their onboard calculations, and computations on the ground show that we're very close to the nominal 90-mile - nautical mile [166.7 km] orbit. As a result of the late lift-off, the Translunar Injection will be a little bit earlier than the Flight Plan Ground Elapsed Time but we don't have an update on this time yet. We expect that it will be on the order of 8 to 10 minutes early. We'll update that time as we get a later update.

000:17:39 - We would expect that the time of arrival at the Moon will be approximately the same as the Flight Plan time in terms of Greenwich Mean Time. The Ground Elapsed Time will be somewhat earlier, and we expect that there will be clock update - a so called clock update - at some point where we make the clocks in Mission Control and aboard the spacecraft agree with the Ground Elapsed Time that they would be showing in the Flight Plan. The net effect will be that we'll arrive at the Moon in a shorter Ground Elapsed Time - in effect about 2 hours, 40 minutes earlier than the Flight Plan would show, but at the same Greenwich mean time or local time here on Earth, that - that we would have had, had we lifted off on time. We're in effect making up the time by speeding up the arrival at the Moon. The spacecraft at Translunar Injection will be going somewhat faster than a nominal lift-off Translunar Injection. Consequently, it will arrive at the Moon going slightly faster, and also somewhat earlier, about 2 hours, 40 minutes earlier in terms of Ground Elapsed Time. This will also mean that the Lunar Orbit Insertion will require a bit more energy to slow the spacecraft down and get it into lunar orbit. These details of course, will all be worked out in the time that we have before our Lunar Orbit Insertion. And, when we get an updated Translunar Injection time, we'll pass that along.

000:23:56 - This is Apollo Control at 24 minutes. Apollo 17 now in an orbit about 90 [nautical] miles by 93 [nautical] miles [167 by 172 km], and everything appears to be nominal aboard the spacecraft and aboard the launch vehicle, Saturn third stage. One additional impact of our late lift-off will be the loss of television coverage for the transposition and docking maneuver. The television coverage will not be possible because the ground track has shifted and we don't have the site coverage that had been expected for television. The Translunar Injection burn, reigniting the Saturn third stage to put the spacecraft on its trajectory to the Moon, is now scheduled to occur at a Ground Elapsed Time of 3 hours, 12 minutes, 35 seconds; or roughly 9 minutes earlier than the Flight Plan time. This again the effect of the late lift-off.
Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "Launching at night, we just had a somewhat different view of the Earth than most other flights have had. The first real view we got of being in orbit at that point was pretty spectacular because it happened to be Earth sunrise and that's a very intriguing and interesting way to get your first indoctrination to Earth orbit."
Schmitt, from 1973 Technical debrief: "The transcript contains some descriptions, by all three of us, of sequences of that sunrise which, in the color banding, may be of some significance for other people."
Schmitt, from 1973 Technical debrief: "I think the tapes cover some comments on the Earth illumination at the horizons. Briefly, right at the terminator horizon of the Earth, you get sharp shadow definition of cloud features. At the sunlit horizon from lunar distance that's a very clear definition between the black of space and the upper portion of the Earth. In Earth orbit and near Earth, you can see the gradation of that horizon caused by the atmosphere. At night around the Earth, there's a very clear horizon glow all around the Earth. Air glow, I guess you would call it. And the horns of the crescent Earth are much sharper and elongated compared to those of the crescent Moon, as if light was being diffracted into the atmosphere and in extending the length of the horns of the crescent."

The Flight Dynamics Officer, continuing to process tracking data following orbital insertions, reports that there is a small amount of out of plane error showing up in the orbit. Looking at one brief bit of data before we lost signal, it appears that one of the four batteries in the Instrument Unit had a very high current drain on it. We will be looking closely at that to see if it was simply a telemetry problem or if, in fact, that battery does have some problem. And we should be about 15 seconds now from reacquiring.

001:25:00 - This is Apollo Control; 1 hour, 25 minutes after lift-off. During the post-launch press conference at Cape Kennedy, we had a short acquisition with the crew through the Hawaiian tracking station. During that period of conversation, and during that period of monitoring the systems on the spacecraft and the launch vehicle, we found that the situation was essentially unchanged. That is, both vehicles now looking good; the spacecraft and the launch vehicle. And we're progressing toward a normal Translunar Injection 1 hour, 46 minutes, 50 seconds from now. The crew has discussed one unexplained series of events. It appears that when certain switches are cycled or moved on panel 2, which is the main panel in front of them, the center panel of the spacecraft, they're getting a master caution and warning signal. A light comes on - a tone comes on. This is to attract the crews attention that something may be wrong and the normal procedure is then to look at another matrix of lights which would zero them in on the problem. The light - the system or the subsystem or particular area being monitored, or which had the problem would light an individual light. However, when they go to this other matrix of lights, they find that none of them are lighted. This is leading the crew and the flight controllers here in Mission Control to believe that they are getting an spurious signal to the master caution and warning, when in fact nothing is wrong. We don't have any further explanation for the problem at this point. We will continue to look at the data and particularly during the translunar coast, we think we'll get a good long time to look at things in detail and try to find out precisely what is happening. At this point however, the problem presents no concern and one of the more likely explanations, or possible explanations that's been advanced is perhaps some contamination in some switches.

Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "By the time we came back over the States on the first pass, we were ready and the spacecraft was ready, and we were configured and could have gone on a TLI-0 without any hurrying and scurrying whatsoever. From that point on, when we got our Go on the booster and a Go for TLI-1, it was an Earth-orbit, an extra Earth-orbit ride to sit back and just monitor our systems in the spacecraft and see what we could see from Earth orbit in terms of viewing. It was an extra 90 minutes of the flight that, if you really had to do without, you could have. And it was not hurried. It was very comfortable, even progressing toward the TLI-0."
By 'TLI-0', Gene means that he felt they could have headed for the Moon with a Translunar Injection burn without having completed a full orbit of Earth.
Schmitt, from 1973 Technical debrief: "Let me add just a couple of things. One thing that we had because of the later launch was a number of LOS/AOS updates to plot which did not interfere with our getting through the checklist. The checklist, I had a feeling, went more slowly than it ever had. But, as Gene says, still with plenty of time to meet the zero up time and to have essentially a whole daylight pass to just relax and look at the Earth. We had one note here. I didn't even remember until I read it here that in the ECS checks. The hydrogen pressure indicators, or part of the indicators, were reading about 10 percent lower than we expected. But, as I recall, it may have been expected."

Contamination inside switches had proved to be a serious problem on previous flights. On Apollo 14, just before landing, an intermittent short circuit inside the LM's Abort switch had to be worked around. Apollo 15's CM had a Thrust switch for the SPS engine that, upon inspection back on Earth, was found to have a tiny strand of wire floating about inside that was likely the cause of a short circuit in space. Although the switches are x-rayed prior to flight, small items of contamination can be hidden behind the metal parts of the switch itself.

Often during the flight, Mission Control will read up lists of important information, mostly numerical, that the crew will use for some function, be it firing engines, taking photographs or some other task. These are known as Pre-Advisory Data, or PAD for short in the acronym-rich world of NASA. Every planned manoeuvre is accompanied by one of these PADs but in addition to that, Mission Control will ensure that, for all stages of the flight, the crew will have a contingency PAD to hand with which they would be able to get home without help in an emergency. The first PAD about to be read up is a contingency PAD for a possible abort with an ignition time of 90 minutes after Translunar Injection. After that there will be another PAD which is fully intended for use, for it has the details of the Translunar Injection burn itself.

Having managed to get the last part of the TLI plus 90 PAD to Jack, Overmyer has added another abort PAD, this of a different type that uses P37. FIrst of all, an interpretation of the TLI plus 90 PAD follows:
Purpose: This PAD provides the details of a long burn of the SPS engine that would occur about 90 minutes after TLI in case the crew need to make an emergency return to Earth soon after heading for the Moon.
Systems: The burn would be made using the large SPS engine at the rear of the Service Module, under the control of the Guidance and Navigation system.
CSM Weight (Noun 47): 66,953 pounds (30,369 kg).
Pitch and yaw trim (Noun 48): -0.59° and +1.88°. These angles represent an initial direction for the gimbal-mounted engine. As the burn progresses, the nozzle will be slowly steered to track shifts in the stack's centre of mass.
Time of ignition (Noun 33): 4 hours, 40 minutes, 1.48 seconds.
Change in velocity (Noun 81), fps (m/s): x, -351.8 (-107.2); y, -0.1 (-0.03); z, +3,378.2 (+1,029.7). The change in velocity is resolved into three components which are quoted relative to the LVLH (Local Vertical/Local Horizontal).
Spacecraft attitude: Roll, 180°; Pitch, 73°; Yaw, 3°. The desired spacecraft attitude is measured relative to the alignment of the guidance platform.
HA, expected apogee of resulting orbit (Noun 44): Not applicable.
HP, expected perigee of resulting orbit (Noun 44): 20.1 nautical miles (37.2 km). The perigee distance is so low, it intersects Earth's atmosphere. What this really means is that the spacecraft will re-enter.
Delta-VT: 3,396.4 fps (1,035.2 m/s). This is the total change in velocity the spacecraft would experience and is a vector sum of the three components given above.
Burn duration or burn time: 4 minutes, 50 seconds.
Delta-VC: 3,380.8 fps (1,030.5 m/s). Using its ability to independently measure acceleration, the EMS can shut down the engine in case the G&N system fails to do so. This figure, Delta-VC, is entered into the Delta-V counter (hence 'C') and is slightly lower than Delta-VT because the EMS does not take account of the engine's tail-off thrust.
Sextant star: Star 11 (Aldebaran, Alpha Tauri) visible in sextant when shaft and trunnion angles are 342.4° and 32.3° respectively. This is part of an attitude check.
Boresight star: Not available. This is a second attitude check which is made by sighting on another celestial object with the COAS (Crew Optical Alignment Sight) at a window.
The next five parameters all relate to re-entry, during which an important milestone is "Entry Interface," defined as being 400,000 feet (121.92 km) altitude. In this context, a more important milestone is when atmospheric drag on the spacecraft imparts a deceleration of 0.05 g.
Expected splashdown point (Noun 61): 13.29° north, 32.0° west; in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean west of the Cape Verde Islands.
Range to go at the 0.05 g event: 1,099.2 nautical miles. To set up their EMS (Entry Monitor System) before re-entry, the crew need to know the expected distance the CM would travel from the 0.05 g event to landing. This figure will be decremented by the EMS based on signals from its own accelerometer.
Expected velocity at the 0.05 g event: 34,904 fps.
Predicted GET of 0.05 g event: 24 hours, 38 minutes, 9 seconds GET.
GDC Align stars: Also known as the set stars, these are used in the event of a primary guidance failure to align the spacecraft's backup attitude system. This system is based around Body-Mounted Attitude Gyros (BMAGs) and Gyro Display Couplers (GDCs). When stars Sirius and Rigel are viewed through the telescope in the correct manner, the spacecraft's attitude will be: roll, 318°; pitch, 148°; yaw, 358°.
The one additional note in the PAD is that there would be no need to perform an ullage burn to settle the contents of the SPS tanks because they are full.
The TLI plus 90 PAD just completely defines the burn to which it refers. However, the crew has another means of defining a return-home burn which uses Program 37. Only four items are required and the computer will work out the other details. An important condition for P37 is that the spacecraft must still be in Earth's sphere of influence, thus simplifying the calculations. The program takes the four values from the PAD that Overmyer read up; the specified time for ignition of the engine (9 hours), a specified maximum change in velocity (or Delta-V, 4,897 fps [1,493 m/s]), the longitude of the splashdown (175° west) and the GET for the start of re-entry (33 hours, 49 minutes). These act as a set of constraints with which it calculates the desired trajectory and the details of the burn to achieve it.

A major component of the spacecraft's primary guidance system is the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). It consists of a gyroscopically-stabilised platform mounted within three gimbals. As the spacecraft rotates, the platform maintains a constant orientation with respect to the stars. However, over time, its precise orientation will drift and so Ron has to regularly compare its orientation with the stars so that it can be returned to perfect alignment. He does this by using program 52 and sighting on two stars that can be seen by the spacecraft's optical system. This is his first realignment of the flight and he sighted on star 22 Regulus (Alpha Leonis) and star 24 Gienah (Gamma Corvi). As a check of his sighting accuracy, the computer compared the measured angle between these stars and the actual angle. The difference between them showed '00000' or 'all balls' on the display, indicating he had marked on them very accurately. Finally, the computer displayed Noun 93, the angles by which the gimbals Have to be rotated or 'torqued' to restore perfect alignment. These were -0.037° in X, -0.007° in Y and -0.021° in Z. The platform was torqued at 001:51:40.

001:56:20 Schmitt: Bob, we're over - what might be - intermediate to low stratus that have a very strong crenulation pattern - pulling out some geological terms here. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it flying.
This utterance from Jack typifies his approach as a scientist to the experiences he is undergoing. Whereas someone steeped in aviation tends to keep off the communication links unless there is an operational requirement, Jack's impulse is to describe what he sees and do so often. Once he gets into lunar orbit, this tendency will come to the fore in full.

Everything is looking real fine, and the only problem in the air is that - those Master Alarms that you have reported - we're not able to tie in anything common yet to any of those things either.

002:00:41 - This is Apollo Control. Apollo 17 now over the horizon from the Ascension site - will be reacquiring in about 25 minutes through Carnarvon. And as you heard, CapCom Robert Overmyer advising the crew, we've been getting a good look at all the data, and spacecraft, launch vehicles, look fine. No discernable problems. Gene Cernan did mention one anomaly and that was the mission timer. One of the - one of the numerous clocks aboard the spacecraft which was running about 15 minutes [means seconds] slow - and Cernan said it appeared that it happened either during the launch phase or shortly before they got down to take a look at it in the lower equipment bay. No explanation for that one at this point. And we show now 1 minute - 1 hour rather, 11 minutes until ignition for the Translunar Injection maneuver, the burn with the Saturn 3rd stage which will place Apollo 17 on its trajectory toward the Moon. Ignition time and still holding at about 3 hours, 12 minutes, 35 seconds Ground Elapsed Time, and that burn will be about 5 minutes, 45 seconds in duration but we don't have the final calculated time from the Flight Dynamics Officer which will undoubtedly vary somewhat from the premission Flight Plan time. Mission Control wish to uplink important data to the computer's erasable memory. Flight controllers do not normally have access to this 2 kilowords of erasable storage, a feature that indicates the extent to which US spacecraft design philosophy placed the crew and their decision-making at the centre of the vehicle's operation. The ground must specfically ask to be given access by the crew. At the same time, the computer, a multitasking machine, has its major mode or its most visible running program set to Program 00, a do-nothing program.

002:26:13 Overmyer: You'll get a CSM state vector if you'll give us P00 and Accept.
Central to the spacecraft's navigation is the maintenance of a concept called the state vector. This is a set of six numbers, applicable at a particular time, and they state two important things; the position and the velocity of the spacecraft. Each is expressed in three dimensions, hence the six numbers and they are relative to either an Earth-centred or a Moon-centred coordinate system. Ron is capable of using star/horizon angles to determine the state vector but the primary means of doing so is using radio techniques from the ground. Having tracked the stack over various ground stations, engineers have derived a revised state vector which needs to be uplinked to a position in memory set aside to accept it.

The PAD is interpreted as follows.
TB-6 predict light: This comes on at 003:02:57, the start of time base-6 and it implies that TIG (time of ignition) will be at 003:12:35, 9 minutes and 38 seconds later. In the event, TB-6 will begin at 003:02:58.6 and ignition (the moment when the J-2's start tank is discharged) will occur at 003:12:36.6.
Attitude for TLI: 180°, 312°, 0° in roll, pitch and yaw respectively. This attitude is stated with respect to the orientation that the guidance platform has held since launch.
Duration of burn: 5 minutes, 51 seconds.
Delta-VC: 10,359.6 fps (3,157.6 m/s) will be entered into the EMS's Delta-V counter (hence the 'C') to allow the crew to monitor the velocity that remains to be added. As the accelerometer in the EMS measures the effect of the S-IVB's burn, the number will decrement towards zero.
VI: Indicated velocity at engine cut-off is 35,582 fps (10,845.4 m/s).
Separation attitude: The correct attitude for separation of the CSM from the launch vehicle is 0°, 345°, 40° in roll, pitch and yaw respectively with respect to the orientation of the guidance platform. Among the criteria for adopting this attitude is solar illumination of the LM to assist the docking procedure.
Extraction attitude: The correct attitude for extraction of the LM from the S-IVB is 300°, 165°, 320° in roll, pitch and yaw respectively.
The next four numbers relate to the setting up of the ORDEAL, a device that allows the crew to use their 8-ball display to monitor the attitude of the stack during the burn. R2 Align: 312.0. R2 Ign: 306.0. ORDEAL Start: 57:10. Yaw: 0°. Ejection time: 004:39:00, the time that the CSM and LM should be ejected from the S-IVB.

Later on, once you get the whole globe in view, it's a relatively simple thing to pin down to within a few degrees of latitude and longitude where you are looking on the Earth."

Future Earth-orbit flights need this continual map update, you're right. You have to do that. As I think back to 3 days in Earth orbit, unless you continually follow a map and a map update as to your rev as you progress around the world, what part of that world you're looking at is very difficult to follow except the precise piece of real estate you're flying over."

And during that passover at Carnarvon, and we've passed up the numbers to the crew they'll use in the Translunar Injection maneuver. The burn is targeted to last 5 minutes, 51 seconds with a change in velocity of some 10,359 feet per second [3,157 m/s], accelerating Apollo 17 to the required speed to get it into an orbit that will intercept the Moon. And the time of ignition, 300 - 03:12:35 and we're showing an ejection time of 04:39. The Transposition and Docking maneuver which precedes ejection is somewhat fluid in that it's done when the crew and Mission Control are ready, following Translunar Injection. However, from the projected time for ejection, it would appear that Transposition and Docking will occur about 25 to 30 minutes ahead of the nominal Flight Plan time. During this Hawaiian pass we're getting another good look at spacecraft and launch vehicle systems. The last look we had through Carnarvon everything looked very good. Flight Director, Gene Kranz, going over the status for these flight controllers observed that there appeared to be no problems that would interfere with TLI and we expect to have a normal Translunar Injection, about 23 minutes from now as Apollo 17 completes its state-side pass and moves out over the Atlantic Ocean at the start of its third revolution.

On occasion, the spacecraft has to carry out a complex series of event, usually involving the detonation of pyrotechnic devices in the correct order and timing. These events are controlled by the Sequential Events Control System (SECS). To prevent unintentinal operation, the SECS is left unpowered most of the time. As TLI and the possibility of separating the CSM from the stack approaches should the burn go wrong, the SECS is powered and armed.

The Launch Vehicle Digital Computer in the IU has begun time base 6, which is indicated to the crew by the S-II Sep light on the launch vehicle indicator panel coming on. This time is the start of an automatic sequence that will lead to engine restart on the S-IVB in 9½ minutes. Having preset the mission timer to read 51:00, the crew wait the 30 seconds that the S-II Sep light stays on, and then start the counter when the light goes out. The timer will help them synchronise their activities with the upcoming burn.
Had a problem arisen that would have caused TLI to be waved off, the crew would have thrown a switch at the bottom-left hand side of panel 2 from "Xlunar Inject" to "Safe" Therefore, at 42 seconds into TB-6, the IU makes the first of two checks to see the status of this switch. If the mission is still bound for the Moon, the S-IVB stops venting H2 to allow the tank to repressurise. At the same time, a hydrogen/oxygen burner is started so that helium, from tanks within the hydrogen tank, can be heated to repressurise both the LOX and LH2 tanks.

The S-IVB engine, delivering about 225,000 pounds [1 MN] of thrust, and it will be increasing the spacecraft velocity in the current state of about 25,000 feet per second up to about 35,585 feet per second.

003:12:17 - 20 seconds now to ignition and we're maintaining communications with the spacecraft through one of the ARIA, Apollo range instrumented aircraft.

Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "The TLI burn from the ground targeting point of view and targeting went just as written. We went down the checklist and cue card without any problems or any anomalies, without any changes except to the manual. We had a change to all our manual angles to monitor the S-IVB burn because of the late lift-off. We wrote those down on our cue cards and were going to use those in case we had to take over during the burn. We had to change to the nominal and we rewrote both of those on our cue cards. That's the only basic change I think we had."
Up to the moment of ignition, the stack has been coasting nose first, or Sharp-End Forward (SEF), with its long axis parallel to the ground below. When the burn starts, it begins to accelerate the stack forward in its orbital motion. Now the stack is gaining more momentum and its inertia causes its curved flight path around Earth to begin to straighten out so that it begins to pull away from Earth. This is occurring on the opposite side of Earth from where the Moon will be in a few days time but the far end of the elliptical orbit that is now being shaped will be near the Moon when Apollo 17 gets there.
003:12:46 - And, very faintly we copy the crew reporting S-IVB ignition and that's confirmed by the telemetry and booster reports the thrust looks good on the S-IVB.
003:12:57 Overmyer: 17, Houston. You're looking good, and the thrust is Go.
003:13:02 Cernan: Bob, you're down in the mud, but we're Go onboard at 20 seconds.
003:13:06 Overmyer: Roger.
003:13:11 - And telemetry data from the Saturn Instrument Unit shows the velocity increasing up now to 26,000 feet per second [7,900 m/s], beginning to climb ever more rapidly.
003:13:21 Schmitt: [garbled] antenna.
003:13:24 - This burn was initiated at an altitude of about 97 nautical miles [180 km] above Earth, and when finished, the spacecraft will be at about 150 [nautical] miles [280 km] above Earth, and on its way to the Moon, some 213,000 miles - nautical miles [394,500 km] away.
003:13:41 Cernan: One minute, Houston in the blind, and we're Go.
003:13:45 Overmyer: Roger, Gene. We can barely hear you through the ARIA, but you're Go.

Mission planners always allowed for two opportunities for the TLI burn; the first after roughly three hours in orbit and the second after an additional 90 minutes. In order to be able to achieve the burn at the second opportunity, extra hydrogen fuel was loaded to compensate for the amount that would boil off during that additional orbit. As a result, there is extra hydrogen available for a first-opportunity burn.
Had they gone to a second-opportunity burn then the J-2 engine would be set to burn at a mixture ratio of 5:1 (5 kg of LOX to 1 kg of hydrogen), producing a thrust of 890 kN. But for the burn at the first opportunity, the first couple of minutes or so are burned at a 4.5:1 mixture ratio, making it hydrogen-rich and thereby using up the spare fuel. The thrust was lower with this ratio at 790 kN but perhaps surprisingly, its efficiency was greater with more momentum being added to the stack for each unit of mass consumed in the engine. The reason for this is that the unburnt hydrogen molecules are easier to accelerate and therefore the exhaust velocity is higher. Higher exhaust velocity means there is more momentum being trnsferred to the stack per unit mass.
When approprate, the Propellant Utilisation valve on the J-2 engine is operated by the IU to give a mixture ratio of 5:1, the normal setting for the engine. The effect for the crew was to feel a surge of power. With slightly more oxygen available to consume the hydrogen, more energy is produced, increasing the engine's thrust by about 13% while reducing its efficiency (or specific impulse) slightly.
003:14:55 - That was CapCom Robert Overmyer confirming to the crew that our data showed the Saturn shifting its propellant utilization for a most efficient utilization of the propellant.
Schmitt, from 1973 Technical debrief: "We all were very aware of PU shift."
Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "I guess I could have called that or I was looking forward to seeing it. It is on my checklist. It's on my cue card and I've looked for it and I've seen it in the simulator."

Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "When we burned out of Earth orbit, we started the burn in darkness and flew right on through a sunrise during the TLI burn. This was pretty spectacular. We shut down in daylight and had no other visual sightings at that point in time."
Schmitt, from 1973 Technical debrief: "And the other thing flying through that sunrise, it did to a small degree interfere with visibility in the cockpit."
Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "It didn't bother me from the standpoint of monitoring on my side at all."

003:16:31 - Apollo 17 now about 107 nautical miles [198 km] above Earth and continuing to climb ever more rapidly.

003:17:11 Cernan: Okay, Bob, 17 is Go at 4:30. You're still unreadable.

003:18:35 Schmitt: Cut-off at 52.
At the end of the TLI burn, Apollo 17 is on a long ellipse whose apogee is well beyond lunar distance. This path is set to pass in front of the Moon's leading hemisphere and as the two bodies, the Moon and the spacecraft, gradually come together, the lunar gravity will increasingly take the spacecraft's coasting path away from that original ellipse, essentially taking some momentum out of the orbit. It will then bend back on itself so that it loops around the lunar far side and head back in the general direction of Earth. Of course, before then, the crew will carry out a burn at the point of closest approach in order to slow the spacecraft further and enter lunar orbit.
003:18:39 Evans: [Laughter.] Did you read the DSKY?
003:18:42 Overmyer: We don't have the DSKY. You have to read it to us, Ron.
If there is a high bit rate of digital data being returned to Earth then flight controllers can see what values are being shown on the computer's display, the DSKY. The ARIA aircraft are not passing high bit-rate data so the numbers relating to the burn will have to be read out.
003:18:46 Evans: Okay. VI is - I got a 00 and a 00 and Noun 95 VI is 35573 - is a plus 9.
003:19:04 Cernan: And, Bob, the EMS is minus - EMS is minus 19.4, minus 19.4.
Their inertial velocity at the end of the burn is 35,573 feet per second [10,843 m/s], according to the spacecraft's guidance system. The accelerometer on the EMS was tracking their Delta V as a check. Having entered a value of 10,359.6 fps, this being the change in velocity that they expected the EMS to sense, its counter overshot by 19.4.
003:19:13 Overmyer: Roger. We copy that.
003:19:17 Cernan: And it was an auto cut-off - auto cut-off on time.
003:19:21 Overmyer: Understand a guided cut-off on time. Looking great.
Cernan, from 1973 Technical debrief: "The S-IVB performance was outstanding. She lit off on time and burned for 5 minutes and some odd seconds as I recall. And we had shutdown on time. The residuals and the EMS on the spacecraft are written down somewhere, but they were all very nominal, very excellent. We stayed in IU. As the S-IVB maneuvered, we flew through a sunrise during TLI, which in itself was also very interesting, very spectacular. We had nominal S-IVB performance after shutdown; and maneuvering to the sep attitude, we went through checkout load Noun 17 and Noun 22. There was again no noticeable pogo. The S-IVB sounded and performed just like it did on the insertion phase burn..."
